NON-PROFIT COMPANY
Non-Profit Company Registration
Support for registering an NPC through the correct CIPC route, whether the organisation uses a standard or customised MOI and whether it has members or not.
REGISTRATION OVERVIEW
How this registration route works
CIPC allows standard NPC registration electronically, including standard structures with or without members. Where the NPC uses a customised MOI, the filing follows the manual company-documents route. This page maps those choices before the application is prepared.
CIPC ROUTE
Electronic for standard NPC, manual for customised NPC
FILING CHANNEL
Use CIPC eServices/BizPortal for standard NPC registration. Use the CIPC company-documents route where the NPC has a customised MOI or a long-form filing requirement.
CIPC TIMING GUIDE
CIPC lists short standard-form NPC registration at about one working day when the filing is correct. Manual NPC applications follow the company-documents service standard and take longer depending on the form used and document quality.
BEST SUITED TO
- Associations, development programmes and mission-led organisations that need a formal corporate vehicle
- Founders who need an NPC structure with or without members
- Organisations preparing for governance, grant, banking or public-interest administration requirements
PRACTICAL NOTE
- NPC registration and NPO registration are not the same process and may involve different authorities.
- If the organisation needs donor, governance or constitutional tailoring, the standard MOI may not be sufficient.

STEP-BY-STEP
Registration process
Decide whether the NPC will have members
Confirm the governance model first because CIPC distinguishes between NPC structures with members and NPC structures without members.
Choose standard or customised MOI
If the NPC can use the standard CIPC MOI, the filing can be prepared electronically. If the organisation needs customised governance clauses, the long-form manual route should be prepared instead.
Reserve the name and prepare the CIPC profile
Reserve the organisation name if required and make sure the customer code that will submit the filing is created and funded.
Prepare incorporator, director and office information
Compile the registered office details, financial year-end, incorporator details, directors and the governance clauses that will appear in the MOI.
Submit the correct NPC filing
Submit the standard NPC electronically through CIPC eServices/BizPortal, or submit the long-form documents through the CIPC company-documents channel where the structure is customised.
Track the application and issue documents
Monitor the filing reference until CIPC issues the registration certificate and adopted MOI for the NPC.
AFTER REGISTRATION
What should happen next
- Open the NPC banking profile and governance files
- Set up bookkeeping, annual returns and statutory registers from the start
- Consider follow-on registrations such as NPO or PBO support where relevant to the organisation's operating model
- Implement director, member and meeting documentation controls early
